WooCommerce: How to configure the email options and their templates

Welcome back  to this guide on how to properly configure WooCommerce! Our goal is drawing near as we check out the last tab in the “Settings” page of our WooCommerce installation: Emails

In the very moment when we start creating an e-commerce store using WooCommerce, a list email templates are created, they will be sent to users (or admins) once a specific action is completed.

For instance order confirmation emails, order cancellation, refund, etc…

Emails

Customizing the content of these emails require a certain degree of knowledge of PHP average customers don’t have, which is why WooCommerce offers a list of options we can use to customize these emails however we see fit to our store.

In this article, we are going to see how to customize email templates, while their content will be the subject of the very next article.

Going through all the possible store emails, you will reach the first settings section: “Email Sender Options”:

Email sender

In here you will find two customizable fields:

  • From name: The sender’s name (WooCommerce sets the name of your website as the sender by default) that will be displayed to customers once they receive an automatic email sent by your store.
  • From address: The email address that is going to be used as sender of these emails. Usually it’s the admin’s email address that gets used, but you can change it (which is recommended, it’s better to use a dedicated email address, especially if it has the same domain as your website)

Once the sender is configured, let’s move on to the actual email template:

Email template

The first two options are about the opening and closing parts of this email.

You can enter an image for the header (in order to do so you need to insert the image url directly, you can upload an image on the website from which you can select the URL in Media > Add New) and the text that will appear at the bottom of the email, in “Footer Text”.

The body of the email is pre-configured and WooCommerce offers a rather limited set of customization offers in that respect, as we will see in detail in the next article, so all we have left to do now is to customize the colors of the email:

base colour

You can customize the color of the base, the background, the body and the font color. If you want to try out several different styles, you can do so by clicking on “Click here to preview your email template” to see the result:

A page with an example of the email at hand will open:

And this is how you configured the templates for the emails that are going to be sent to your customers, in just a few clicks. It’s very important to configure this bit right, since emails are going to be the most common form of contact you are going to have with your customers and they are going to have to be clear and professional.

Thank you for reading this chapter in our WooCommerce guide, see you in the next article!
